To Disney, and Beyond!

Did you know that 60% of college students now complete some type of internship? An internship in college used to set you apart from your peers. Now, many employers assume that you’ll have completed an internship sometime during your college career.

Hannah Jones is a sophomore pursuing an A.S. degree in Communication and will be transferring next fall to Niagara University with a generous scholarship. You won’t see her in class this semester at JCC or hanging out in the Student Senate office—she is completing an internship at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida! Hannah was accepted into the Spring Advantage program, which runs from mid-January to August 9.

Before she left I got a chance to interview Hannah. She will be living in what she calls the “Disney Dorms” for a small fee that is taken out of her paycheck every week. She’ll earn that paycheck working in food service in Magic Kingdom at Fantasy Land and Tomorrow Land.

Hannah actually applied for this internship on a whim and was lucky enough to be chosen. I shouldn’t say she was “lucky,” because if anyone was qualified for this internship, it’s Hannah. With seven years experience in food service and an excellent work ethic, this dedicated Starbucks barista is an obvious choice.

Even though Hannah isn’t planning on having a lot of free time, she’s looking forward to Star Wars weekend (who wouldn’t?) and has set a goal of getting her picture taken with every one of the Disney characters who wander the park. She is also looking forward to meeting the other interns who are coming to Disney from all over the world.

Are you interested in completing an internship while you are here at JCC? Hannah had help setting up her internship from the great folks over at experiential learning. If you know that you want to complete an internship while completing your degree contact Laura Turnbull and your advisor immediately to make sure that you can fit one into your schedule, etc.

We’ll be getting updates from Hannah every so often, so check back to see how her adventure unfolds.

Hi, my name is Kate and I’m currently a sophomore student at Jamestown Community College. I work on campus answering phones at the switchboard and also help out in the President’s Office. I love to sing and have participated in choir and vocal jazz here on campus. In my free time I enjoy listening to music and spending time on my family’s farm with my goats.
