Fond Memories of Tropical Biology

What can I say about my experience with JCC’s Tropical Biology class? It was amazing and far exceeded my expectations! The class was fast paced and filled with fascinating information. In addition to the material, the professors were well versed in class topics and open to further discussions.

The apex of the class was our trip to Costa Rica and Panama.  I didn’t know what to expect as I ventured out of the country with people I barely knew. That changed rather quickly, and friendships were created for years to come. The accommodations were very unique and exciting. I found myself spending multiple nights sleeping on hammocks, surrounded by sounds of howler monkeys and various species of birds. Our tour guide, Marco, was unbelievable. He was well versed, polite, and very personable. Staying at the eco resort that he created with his wife, Almond and Corals, was an experience I still talk about and suggest to people more than a decade later.

To me, Tropical Biology was more than just a class; it was an experience. I can now say that I watched a volcano erupt and searched for turtle hatchlings. In addition to that, I ziplined through the rainforest canopy, snorkeled with sting rays, rode horseback through a stream, explored the culture, and hiked to my heart’s content. In all honesty, I can say this trip was something I will never forget. Not a year goes by that I don’t consider going back and doing it all over again.
